New York City, 2000, I created fabric, 3D movable sculptures, showed them with artist group Skewville. The sculptures proved difficult for transport and storage, I began working on flat art pieces instead using fabric as the medium still. My work showed in various galleries and adding art to the streets as nom de plume Pufferella. I founded and curated Orchard Street Art Gallery and Factory Fresh. Recently my work has evolved, adding ink and paint to create “Sewn Paintings”.
Born in post-revolutionary Cuba in 1987 and educated within the Russian Academy’s influence, my work reflects these formative experiences. Denying my history would disregard my existence. Cuban history inspires me to reevaluate storytelling and question historical accuracy. This ongoing conflict shapes my art, where I recreate my own narratives. Decontextualizing epochs and symbols connects past and present, allowing me to alter history in an illusory world.
Claudia Robles-Gil, a rising artist from Mexico City, draws from her rich multicultural experiences growing up between Mexico and the United States, to create vibrant, soulful portals to human experience. In her work, she explores themes of personal identity, spirituality and the interconnectedness of humanity and nature.
What if we saw nature not as distinguishable things like trees, mountains, and soil, but as a cloud of influences that surround us? Harkening back to her memories growing up in nature and a personal interest in Ecofeminism, Johanna's method of printmaking is in itself a dialogue with nature. In cyanotypes, the intentional outlines of base drawings intermingle with spontaneous factors like the angle, brightness, and hue of sunlight - even the canvas it is printed on is candidly frayed at the edges. In her other prints also, watercolor-like effects make even the ground appear buoyant.
At its core, James' work is about intimacy. His sexual identity and personal relationships form a prism, through which the content of his paintings bend and refract as they examine intimacy between strangers. People on the street, the subway, and couples sharing private moments in public are all viewed from a queer stance to ask questions about loneliness, contact, and communication. By combining collected images and personal experiences, James creates composite sketches that repurpose the initial encounters captured in them.
She infuses her lifelong love of myths and stories and uprooted background into her paintings. Leaning into the mysterious, her work explores existential dread and beautiful imperfection.
Fabienne (Fab) Sowa-Dobkowski is a California-based self-taught photographer with a PhD in Art History. Her work blends fine art and photography to explore the connection between humanity and nature. Born in Belgium and inspired by her international experiences, she balances her roles as an art historian and artist in the Bay Area and the tranquil Sierra Nevada Foothills. Fab's evocative work can be found in both public and private collections in the US and in Europe.
Jane Kang Lawrence received her BFA from Mason Gross School of the Arts, Rutgers University. Following painting residencies in Italy she continued art making with teaching by pursuing her Masters from the School of Visual Arts. Jane has taught visual arts, ceramics, and visual literacy for students in NYC for 17 years. She is a Pulitzer Center teaching fellow leading to publication of a visual arts curriculum. Her most recent project is to curate the national I Like Your Work’s Summer 2022 Open Call. Jane is a founding director of Peep Space (Tarrytown, NY) and maintains a painting studio in New York City.
Ayane Kurai paints from the soul, rendering her subjects into soft abstraction. Painting is the most accurate form of her self expression. Marrying physical and mental she is able to emote with the world through her art. Ayane uses all senses available to her when working, combining all aspects of her subject to create a work that most accurately embodies everything about it.
Dirk Westphal received his M.F.A from the California Institute of the Arts. His art works have been exhibited throughout the United States and abroad in galleries and institutions such as Tim Olsen Gallery(Sydney),the Cat Street Gallery (Hong Kong), Baldwin Gallery (Aspen), Design Within Reach (Los Angeles), Glenn Horowitz (East Hampton), Mixed Greens, Exit Art, Art in General, Cuchifritos, 6 Decades/Boo-Hooray (all in New York), and the New York Historical Society. His work is included in such prominent collections as the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute, Progressive, Pfizer, the U.S. Department of State, Corelle, SEI, the New York Times Photo Archives, the Rockefeller Institute, and the personal collection of Sir Elton John, among others. His photos have appeared in numerous publications, including the New York Times, the New York Times Magazine, the New York Observer, the Village Voice, Marie Claire, Maxim, Mother Jones, National Geographic, der Spiegel and Stern.
Steve is a British/American artist based in New York. He studied photography at the prestigious Newport School of Documentary Photography under David Hum. He's been involved in the Arts as a painter, illustrator, art director, graphic designer and photographer. He has now merged both mediums into one cohesive process. He creates original hand-drawn large format digital prints with an organic appearance. His work has been exhibited in the U.S. and the U.K. (at London's Victoria & Albert Museum).
Owen Brown was born in Chicago, trained as a pianist, took a drawing class at 23, and much of what he’s wanted to do since then has been paint. Brown holds degrees from Yale and the University of Chicago. A long-time San Francisco resident, he now lives in Minneapolis. Brown’s works have been acquired by the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco and the Weisman Museum of Minneapolis, and can be found in collections in this country, Europe, and Asia.
MacDonald graduated with a BFA from Emily Carr University in Vancouver, BC, Canada. She has exhibited her meticulously crafted work throughout North America. A recipient of the Queen’s Art Fund New Work Grant (2019), MacDonald recently completed a 4heads residency on Governors Island, New York (2022). Based in New York, MacDonald creates compelling pieces characterized by dark humor, social satire, and an obsessive attention to detail. Her intimately scaled artworks belong in private collections throughout Canada and the U.S.
Joe Piscopia builds 3D shapes with 2D mediums. Informed by strongly contrasted lighting, Joe’s gradations bring every object, concept, or pattern to life in abstract forms. Shapes and colors document moments of thought and emotion in Joe’s life. Starting with a thought, a bird, or a single word, he intuitively explores from there into a realm of soft geometry.
Self-taught artist Natasha Monahan Papousek finds inspiration in everyday backyard beauty. During her more than 25 years of working as a secretary, Natasha tried to fit her art in the spare moments of her life. When her father passed without fulfilling his dream of sharing his passionate paintings, she pivoted to fully embrace her artistic journey. Using a unique upcycling process, her mosaic-like collages celebrate nature’s resilience, evoking joy and revealing beauty in the world around us.
Jacki Davis is a multidisciplinary artist based in New York City. Jacki has lived and worked between Los Angeles and New York, across art direction, creative writing, and costume/set design. Her work embodies concepts of the natural world and often refers to ancient philosophies of indigenous cultures, directly linked to her heritage. She creates works on paper, artist books, paintings, photography, ceramic, performance and installation. Recent works in her decades long US currency collage series approach subject matter related to environmental conservation, and the study of the earth’s animal realm as a spiritual guide. Recent acrylic paintings explore interpretations of energy frequency and quantum theory through forms visualized in meditation. Jacki has exhibited in New York, Los Angeles, Santa Fe, NM, Houston, TX and Miami Beach, Fl.
Monica Carrier (b. 1978 Philadelphia, PA) has exhibited widely including solo exhibitions at A.I.R. Gallery and Thomas Hunter Project Space in NYC and FjellerupIBund & Grund in Denmark. She has been awarded fellowships, residencies and grants from Hunter College, A.I.R. Gallery and Arts@Renaissance. She regularly curates, most recently at PeepSpace, a contemporary gallery that she founded in 2020. Carrier holds a BFA from Tyler School of Art and an MFA from Hunter College.
Nicki Adani, a California-based multi-disciplinary artist, uses her extensive fashion design background in her sculpting practice. Her multicultural heritage informs her work, as she creates balance using opposing elements. Consistently exploring themes of empowerment and inner transformation, Adani's work has been featured at prestigious events such as Silicon Valley Sculpture, Burning Man, and BottleRock Napa. She received an honoraria grant from Burning Man Arts for her installation, "Taking Flight ''.
Sandra is a Colombian artist based in New York who works with painting and mixed media. Her works have been exhibited in museums, including El Museo del Barrio, the Coney Island Museum and the Long Island Museum in New York, and the Museo de Arte Moderno and Museo MAJA in Colombia. She is a recipient of the Nathalie Angles Award and the Sommerville Arts Prize. Sandra holds a BFA from the University of Antioquia and an MFA in painting from Hunter College in New York.
Younkin received her BFA from California College of the Arts and MFA from Parsons The New School. Her vibrant paintings were recently exhibited with Studio 41 and 440 Gallery. Younkin’s work resides in the permanent collection of the Ramsey County Historical Society in Minnesota as part of their exhibit “Persistence: Continuing the Struggle for Suffrage and Equality: 1848-2020”. Her work was recenty published in I Like Your Work’s 2023 Summer Exhibition Catalog “Esprit de l’escalier'' curated by Alicia Puig.
Following her B.A. in Fine Art in Chester, England, Cat pursued an early career working as a portrait photographer in Europe and later, as a Fine Art photographer in Memphis, TN. After many years in this field, she returned to her childhood passion of drawing and painting, specializing in watercolor. Cat works out of her home studio, however collections of her work can be viewed at galleries and venues across her local town. Cat is also committed to giving back and participating in fundraising opportunities both locally and internationally focusing on economy stabilization and wildlife conservation.
Michelle Selwa is an artist and Brooklyn native currently based in New York City. Her work explores the ways technology affects our relationship with images and memory, and the anxiety of archiving images from rapidly degrading mediums.
