An exploratory translation of Korean folk art, minhwa- I am storytelling through moments of abstraction and creating a visual allegory between individuals and place. Like quiet intuitions, my work contains multiple layers of mark making and form, colors create paths and enclosures for thoughts. My paintings and collage create a biography of layered reflections. The paintings offer a unique perspective of meditative qualities of spatial layering, a moment to examine more carefully time and quality of mark making. The imagery consists of motifs associated with "symbols of longevity", rooted from Chinese Taoism and folded into Korean culture. They include ten elements that symbolize “longevity”: the sun, clouds, mountains, water, pine trees, tortoises, deer, cranes, peaches, and the herbs of eternal youth. The vibrancy of colors brings you out from engaging with the smaller detailed and intimate moments of the work.
