Raphaele Cohen-Bacry

Raphaele Cohen-Bacry

Born in Paris / Works in Los Angeles

Born and raised in Paris, France, Raphaele Cohen-Bacry is a Los Angeles–based
interdisciplinary artist whose practice spans painting, sculpture, collage, installation, and
mixed media. Drawing on both found and natural materials as well as art historical
references and familiar imagery, her work explores resilience, memory, healing, and
humanity's evolving relationship with the natural world.
She studied painting and printmaking while earning a Doctorate in Pharmacology and a
degree in Performing Arts from l'École de la Rue Blanche in Paris. This interdisciplinary
education continues to inform her practice, combining observation, experimentation,
and material research with an intuitive visual language.

After living and working in Paris and New York, she settled in Los Angeles in 2003,
where she has developed a practice spanning gallery exhibitions, public art, and
community-engaged projects. Her work has been exhibited nationally in solo and group
exhibitions at institutions including the Torrance Art Museum, Los Angeles Municipal Art
Gallery, the University of Arizona, Arizona State University, Cerritos College Art Gallery,
and other museums and university galleries. She has participated in numerous artist
residencies and site-specific projects, including the Torrance Art Museum's Studio
System residency and Camera Obscura Art Lab in Santa Monica.

Recent projects include Tribulations, a solo exhibition in Las Vegas reviewed by The
New York Times T Magazine, and a solo exhibition of driftwood sculptures at the Pacific
Grove Museum of Natural History that will travel to the Channel Islands Maritime
Museum. She received a year-long grant from the Picerne Family Foundation to
develop art experiences for children and adults facing social and emotional challenges
in collaboration with two Los Angeles ranches. Her public installation Gentle Giants is
currently on view at Adams Square Mini Park Gas Station in Glendale, with upcoming
projects including a two-person exhibition at Allan Hancock College's Ann Foxworthy
Gallery and a new public art installation for the City of Glendale.
