Paint has a language that expresses poetically on Penny Santy’s canvases. Santy earned her BFA from Syracuse University where she built her love of working in oils. Her most recent awards are Boldbrush Finalist, 2024, juried by Kathie Odom, and the 2022 Dorothy Bostwick Campbell Memorial Prize, Cooperstown, NY. Exhibits include Dacia Gallery, NYC; Memorial Art Gallery, Rochester, NY; Arnot Art Museum, Elmira, NY; regular exhibitor at Art Haus, Syracuse, NY; and solo artist at Axom Gallery, Rochester, NY.

How I begin a painting has a lot to do with the end result. Initial marks take advantage of the uncontrolled material, not having to be concerned with what it will become. This allows it to quickly become a dialog between me and the marks I make. Memories and feelings can enter into this conversation freely. As I continue working on the piece with formal instruction and meaning, I continue to ask myself to respond in a more spiritual way.
