Melanie Kozol is a Brooklyn-based landscape painter whose work explores the relationship between direct observation, memory, and her emotional response to the environment. Working from plein air watercolors, photographs, and memory, she creates interpretive paintings that reimagine the landscape through the physical process of painting, intuition and invention. Kozol focuses on expansive terrains, water, sky, and vegetation, balancing atmospheric beauty with psychological and environmental tension.

Melanie Kozol received her MFA from the School of Visual Arts and her BA from Connecticut College. Kozol is the recipient of an NEA Visual Artist Fellowship in Painting and has attended residencies including the Arctic Circle, Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, the Clipperton Project, DNA, the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, and the Saltonstall Foundation. Her work has been exhibited widely and is included in public and private collections including JetBlue at JFK Airport, Deutsche Bank, Pfizer Corporation, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, and the Bellagio Hotel. Her paintings have appeared in the films Damsels in Distress (2011) and A Birder’s Guide to Everything (2013). Kozol is a visiting professor at Pratt Institute and teaches painting at 92NY School of the Arts.
