BIO

New York based artist Jade Chan was born and raised in Amsterdam and is of Chinese heritage. She earned her BFA in Fine Arts from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York in 2010. Jade has worked in fashion, graphic and web design prior to full-time commitment as an artist. Chan has lived and worked in Amsterdam, London and Hong Kong before settling in New York. She now works from a studio in Long Island City.

I felt like an outsider, not belonging to either culture. I combine these experiences with my observation of shapes, form and color to illicit an emotional response from the observer. My creative process is part subconscious, part planned and part spontaneous.

I am an abstract painter that uses oil and mixed media on canvas. I get my inspiration from my past interacted with observations that I pull from my environment to express my world. I was raised in a traditional Chinese household and grew up in liberal Netherlands. It resulted in many conflicts between family life and the outside world.
