BIO
Ellery Harkness (b. 1999, San Francisco, CA) is an interdisciplinary artist and designer living and working in New York, NY. Through studio work, research and writing, her practice examines the ideas of collage and abstraction of the everyday as ways to explore politics of the environment and portraiture. She mostly works in painting, video installation, photography, and mixed media collage. Harkness graduated from Bowdoin College with a degree in Visual Arts, Art History, and a minor in Political Science.
I use art to explore ideas and contemporary conversations with a particular attunement to the climate, women’s experiences, the passage of time, and portraiture. I am currently excited by collage as a way to contrast various things to create new meanings, particularly the visual combination of abstract and tangible things. I think of collage not only as the literal combining of source material or mixed media but also as a conceptual idea to open up contrasts between disparate ideas and visual elements. My source material comes from images I and others have taken rather than painting En plein air. I see painting as an extension of my video and photography work by situating source material in the realms of photo and video sources over reality.
