Layers of built up soot are what form the ghostly-textured shapes in Evan Ishmael’s artwork. The gradation and planes that appear in Evan’s other works also appear here, though instead of spray-on acrylic paint and concrete, these works are just soot on a panel. Don’t be deceived by the apparent simplicity of the material, though: the delicate dimensional and textural effects achieved here do not come easily.

      Works in East Williamsburg

Evan works from his studio in East Williamsburg, the back wall neatly lined with tools and the slightly sour smell of wood in the air. Considering his sculpture and design background, his command of unusual materials like soot residue, concrete, and spray doesn’t come as a surprise. But you may be surprised when his minimal, even digital looking, compositions start to unfold in poetic layers-- “bracing practice” indeed.
