In Sweep, Schmidt recalls the arcade game where coins and prizes are gradually pushed off a ledge to be collected by the lucky winner. As in her other work, layers of gestural elements interact with geometric lines and shapes. The tension in the hard-edge vs. organic elements often brings to mind games, systems of measure or other organizational devices that are used to understand, explore, invent or entertain.

Geometric lines and shapes engage with the with the organic elements recalling games, systems of measure or other organizational devices that are used to understand, explore, invent or entertain. In so doing, the artist attempts to find comfort and sense in this world and our place within it.
