The ARK series strays from Evan’s other work in material: rather than spray acrylic on concrete, these shapes of the alphabet are gouache on paper (with Evan’s signature layer of soot, or course.) Planes of soot (collected directly from smoke onto surface) and color are carefully arranged to represent the letters X, M, and W, remixing the most angular members of the alphabet.

The work comes with a Certificate of Authenticity signed by the artist.

Works in East Williamsburg

Evan works from his studio in East Williamsburg, the back wall neatly lined with tools and the slightly sour smell of wood in the air. Considering his sculpture and design background, his command of unusual materials like soot residue, concrete, and spray doesn’t come as a surprise. But you may be surprised when his minimal, even digital looking, compositions start to unfold in poetic layers-- “bracing practice” indeed.
