Mitsuko Brooks is a 1.5 generation Shin-Issei Japanese American, born on Misawa Air Force Base (Japan), living in Brooklyn, New York. She received her MFA in Painting & Drawing from UCLA, BFA from Cooper Union and is currently pursuing her MLIS at Queens College (CUNY) with a Certificate in Archives and Preservation of Cultural Materials. Her work has been featured in The Los Angeles Times, Hyperallergic and The Art Newspaper. She completed artist residencies with The Wassaic Project; and The Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden and participated in The Queen's Museum's Set on Freedom artist retreat. Brooks was awarded grants from The Robert Rauschenberg Foundation, Common Field, The Sally Van Der Lier Fellowship and the Artists’ Fellowship, Inc. She has exhibited at The Japanese Museum of San Jose, Smack Mellon, Materials for The Arts, Rush Arts Gallery, Makeroom LA and Steve Turner.
