Maxey's vibrant red work alludes to some of the main themes of 2020. While the roll of toilet paper points out some of the absurdities that occurred at the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, other aspects of the work are more somber and explore how religion is, in a way, weaponized in politics.
Born in AR / Works in Brooklyn, NY
Stories from a religious upbringing intertwine with contemporary queer experience by way of Leeanne Maxey’s purposefully composed still lifes. Leeanne invites us into her own personal mythology through bright colors and crisply cut felt pieces, as she reimagines tales we thought we knew. The artist’s hand provides a comforting touch to iconic subject matter.
