[From the artist] “Inside/Out” was an attempt to recreate the type of painting I had been mostly creating in 2016. It occurred to me that as a painter, and a person, because I am every developing, even though I would love to be able to produce some of the types of paintings I had in the past, it might not be possible. I couldn’t recreate the colors or the movement behind the strokes that I had been feeling at that point. It became very interesting to me that as I learned new things while continuing to practice my painting, I was simultaneously losing other things that I had before. ‘Inside/Out’ is, therefore, a reference to my own past paintings, but also finding my way through what I did and didn’t like about this particular background in a new way. I love the texture of the bottom layer of paint but disagreed with some of the high contrast between the strokes. I used the white as a block-out tool to draw attention to the wave of movement happening on the right and the gold stripe to direct the eye to the right also.
‘Inside/Out’ is a reference to Kimmy’s past paintings. She loves the texture of the bottom layer of paint, but disagrees with some of the high contrast between the strokes. The white is used as a block-out tool to draw attention to the wave of movement happening on the right and the gold stripe to direct the eye to there as well.

Kimmy Quilin with her choppy bob haircut and a living room shrouded in warm clay colors, could be her own indie movie heroine. Underlying Kimmy’s study of colors and forms, whether in expressionistic strokes or recent minimalism, is a love and attention to things around her.
