Original Artwork
Dimensions: Height 34 in x Width 32 in.
Medium: Acrylic and sand on canvas
Saskia builds her artwork on photographs from her travels and her family photo albums from the Chesapeake Bay Area. Although she reduces landscapes to geometric "frames" and interactions between color - sometimes experimenting on Photoshop before moving onto canvas - she counteracts this digital flatness with micro-textures of sand and chiffon. The reduction almost feels like the process of observations boiling down to a kernel of memory.
Born in Baltimore, MD / Works in Greenpoint
Is there something prophetic about Saskia Fleishman's name? Because...pardon us for the terrible pun but her landscapes are fully fleshy. In a twist of fate, fluid and ethereal things like cloud or waves of the sea have been built up with sand, while backgrounds of striking techicolor recede away from the material world. You'll like Saskia if: You spend hours playing around with the gradient tool on Photoshop.
