BIO
Stories from a religious upbringing intertwine with contemporary queer experience by way of Lee Maxey’s purposefully composed still lifes. Lee invites us into her own personal mythology through bright colors and crisply cut felt pieces, as she reimagines tales we thought we knew. The artist’s hand provides a comforting touch to iconic subject matter.
Born in Arkansas, Lee Maxey lives and works in Brooklyn. Recent exhibitions include a solo show at the artist-run space in the Tribeca Hercules Art/Studio Program; group shows at SK Art, NYC, and The Bureau of General Services: Queer Division, NYC; and a two-person exhibition in the 2019 SPRING/BREAK Art Show, NYC. She is an alumna of the Fire Island Artist Residency. Maxey’s work is in the Rare Books Collection at the Howard Gotlieb Archival Research Center, and awards include the Kahn Career Entry Award. She received her MFA in 2016 from Boston University and her BFA in 2011 from the University of Central Arkansas. She currently teaches painting at Brooklyn College.
